St Athanasius the Great

Archbishop of Alexandria · c. 296 – 373 AD

Archbishop of Alexandria and the great defender of Orthodoxy against Arianism, St Athanasius wrote On the Incarnation as a young man, as the second half of a two-part work. It is the classic patristic treatise on why the Word of God became man: to restore the divine Image in us, to conquer corruption and death, and, in his famous words, “He became man that we might be made God.” He was exiled five times for the faith of Nicaea.
