St Basil the Great
Archbishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia and one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, St Basil the Great was a father of monasticism, a champion of the Nicene faith against Arianism, and the author of the Liturgy that bears his name. His Hexaemeron — nine homilies on the six days of creation, preached to his people during Lent — reads the opening of Genesis as a hymn to the Creator, weaving the natural science of his age (the sea, the stars, the plants and the animals) into wonder and praise.
